Writer of the month!

Each month, class teachers are sharing a piece of writing which has amazed them. The winner will have their writing framed on display in the school for a whole month and will receive a prize.

September’s writer of the month was  Hafsa, for her incredible superhero story!

Here she is with her writing and the display, feeling very proud of herself.

Well done Hafsa!

Who will be Writer of the month for October?

The papaya that spoke

Our Talk for Write story is currently ‘The papaya that spoke’ so we decided to try a papaya!

There were very mixed responses to the flavour of papaya

‘yucky’

‘slimy’

‘sweet’

‘unbelievable’

‘soft’

‘delicious’

What other words can you think of to describe the papaya?

October already!

Hope everyone is keeping well -and warm and dry!

This week, Class 5 have written a Superhero story about a playground rescue.  Everyone had a really good go with some great ideas.

We are working hard on handwriting –  concentrating on keeping a uniform size and starting each letter in the correct place.   If anyone would like a sheet to help practice at home please ask.  The writing is fab in the practice books – the trick is now to transfer into every day work!

We are really getting to grips with place value – tens and ones – which is great.

Next week we are starting a new Talk for Write piece – The Papaya that Spoke.

Thank you for persevering with the new homework books. If your child is finding it tricky, please just encourage to complete as much as possible without too much stress.  This is a new initiative throughout school and even just getting used to the routine is progress.

Our spellings have proved quite tricky so these will be changed this week. Hopefully, the children will grow in confidence this way.

The reading book change over is a tad problematic.  The books have to be quarantined so if they are late back they take longer to be returned.   We have a new scanning in and out system too which is time consuming.   Thank  you for your continued patience.   If there is internet access then Bug Club is useful as it will check understanding as the story or information unfolds.

We hope you continue to stay safe and getting to grips with the fluctuating government advice!

Take care!

Welcome Back!

Hello!

Hopefully everyone is back and now settled/settling in.  We seem to have got off to a good start in Class 5.

We sent a copy of our power point to all parents as not many were able to make the Zoom  Meet the Teachers.  Hopefully, you have all been able to access the information it contains.  Let us know if not.

We have begun the important mathematical concept of Place Value.  The children have been making bundles of 10 straws/lollypop sticks to help them understand the concept of 10s.   In my day, it was called tens and units but we now say tens and ones!   We will spend a while on this ensuring full understanding as it is sometimes a tricky concept for children.  We are doing lots of counting forwards and backwards in 10s starting from different numbers.

In T4W, we are focusing on basic story structure – beginning, build-up, resolving and ending looking at characters in the main.

Our Geography Learning Challenge is based around Keyna.   We had arranged for a visit from a Masai Warrior group visit but sadly due to the virus they were unable to come.

Science is based around Animals (including humans) and the challenge is How will 5 a day help me to be healthy? The children will be looking for similarities and differences and categorising – which is a useful science skill.

On a Wednesday afternoon, Class 5 have Mr C O Neill for p.e. and Mr Donaghy for computing lessons.

We continue to work hard as a school to keep the children safe and well whilst trying to catch up with their learning. We appreciate your support with this.

A ever, any concerns please let us know.  It is easier if you could message through dojos or emailing as the mornings and end of the day sometimes it is trickier to give you the time needed.

Thanks

Class 5 Team
